Flokati Rug
Flokati rugs are a Greek tradition and have been handmade in the Pindus and Vlachs mountains since the 5th century. Though they can be dyed many colors, they are usually off-white and have a pile and backing both made of wool. Rug weavers place the rugs in cold water (often in a river) to create the shag that characterizes the rugs. Manufacturers of Flokati rugs simply use a whirlpool bath for about 40 hours to soak the rugs after they are woven. This lengthy soaking process allows the fibers of the rug to swell to a lush softness.
One quality of Flokati area rugs that has helped to give it staying power is its ability to resist stains and dirt. Contemporary homeowners and designers often place them in high-traffic areas to cut down on the visibility of dirt dragged in from outside. Even when there is a slight appearance of dirt, the true Flokati rug can be cleaned and returned to its original beauty with little effort.
The rug is usually taken outdoors and shaken before being raked with a small, clean rug rake. Then it can be spot cleaned with mild soap and water. Although some have tossed their large rugs in a gentle wash cycle, hand washing is always best. Then the rug should be allowed to air dry.
This very practical way of keeping a home area looking clean is one reason many designers do not have any desire to invest in imitation Flokati rugs that have been mass-produced with synthetic fibers. Unlike the original wool pieces, the synthetic blends do get dirty easily and do not maintain the fresh, plush look and feel of the original rug.
Those who know the difference often will not entertain any version of the faux rug. Those who do not know the difference should always consider the reputation of the seller and read all the fine print before making a purchase. The sales text for many rugs may indicate “Flokati rug” in the title but reveal the fact that the rug is an imitation in the description. Some unscrupulous sellers tend to prey on buyers who do not know the difference.
Since prices can range from about $30 to well over $1,000, Flokati rugs can become a sizable investment. Buyers will pay quite a bit more for them, but they will outlast any imitations.
