Large Rugs
The days of fully carpeted homes are now well and truly past, with polished floorboards and parquet flooring being all the range. Yet, however, in order to avoid starkness within your home, it is important to add some soft furnishings to break up the area. A series of small rugs means that the overall look is disorganized, with a large rug instead offering a sense of continuity.
However, with the vast range of large rugs out there, it is a maze to try to find the one that will suit and this article serves to briefly help you wind your way through that maze.
When purchasing large area rugs you need to consider the following:
Size – the most important consideration is that of size. You need a rug that is large enough to cover the majority of your room yet not be so large that it is tucked under the sofa etc. Instead, you want the rug to be placed centrally on the floor with a visible space between the edge of the rug and the furniture pieces. When measuring the size, be aware that you may well change the arrangement of your room in the future and as such, ensure that the rug will still fit with any changes.
Plain or design – large rugs come in an amazing array of designs from geometric to patterned to solid blocks of color. If your furniture and general look of the room is quite busy, with lots of ornaments and pictures on the walls, then a plain design is recommended over a design. On the other hand, if your room as a whole is quite plain, then the purpose of the rug is to draw attention and thus a design in keeping with the color scheme is necessary.
Color – the color of your large area rug is very much a personal choice. However, there are some indicators to consider, such as whether there will be a lot of walking on the rug with dirty shoes (e.g. with children or dogs etc!) If this is the case, then a rug that does not show the dirt is needed, whereas if you are anticipating careful use of the room and the rug then lighter colors are suitable.
Thickness – the thicker a rug the more luxurious it appears, so it is well worth spending that little bit more to get the quality that you want
